Exeption to the Rule

Although the shelter is only able to take in hand written words, occasionally we feel compelled to bring to your attention particularly desperate situations of abandoned printed words.

These words found in Las Vegas Nevada March 2008, not only are they abandoned, but their shame is exposed publicly! Stop the madness!

"missing lap top" found

The "missing laptop" tried to jump off the third floor sign up sheet, hitching a ride on Eric Steen. This is a good reminder that all found words are not abandoned, some in fact have run away.

As we had no reason to believe these words were being mistreated (although they probably could use more attention) we put them back.

New Orphans, and Space Update

Here is the space at 6th and clay that SAW was trying to negotiate for our shelter, it was perfect as the words could stay comfortably behind glass, easy to view, even from outside on the sidewalk, and yet out of harms way. Alas it was not to be (please go to the read more section to see the refusal email). So all of the shelter's words are living for the time being in over crowded conditions on the intake board, as seen in this slide show.

Sandy,

PSU does not oversee the display box at 6th and Clay. While PSU does lease the classroom space, it does not control the rest of the building.

I am sorry that we cannot explore this opportunity for PSU!

Thank you for your interest,

Hi,
Bobbie just rang me with your email address and suggested I write you
with a bried description of what I would like to use the display case
(6th and Clay/Broadway building ground floor 6th street entrance) for.

I am an MFA student (Art and Social Practice), I would like to use the
case for an ongoing project that intersects Art, Creativity, and
Linguistics. The Project is called SAW (shelter for abandoned words)
The case would contain hand written words found discarded. Information
about the project, and photo documentation of how people use words that
they "adopt" from the case. So basically it will be text and
photographs.

This project has just started, but you can get an idea of the flavor
at http://shelterforabandonedwords.blogspot.com/
Thanks to both of you for your help!
Please let me know if you need anything else,
Sandy Sampson
